Kyle Heuven is helemaal gelukkig in Canada, maar kroketten zijn daar wel moeilijk te krijgen

Als Kyle terugkijkt op zijn jeugd dan herinnert hij zich nog wel dat er thuis in het begin vooral Nederlands gesproken werd, “maar vanaf dat ik naar the playschool ging, werd Engels de hoofdtaal.” Soms gebruiken mijn ouders nog een Nederlands woord, als ze het Engelse woord niet zo snel weten, maar dan heb je het ook wel gehad. En Kyle zelf is toilettasje blijven gebruiken. “Whenever we would pack for a holiday my mom would double check everything and make sure I had my toilettasje, that’s the one word to this day that I will still use constantly if I’m packing.”

Kyle is een echte Canadees, hij heeft dan ook niet veel meegekregen van de emigratie: “I heard stories from my parents that they struggled when they first moved here learning all the laws from Canada compared to what the laws were in Holland.” Die Nederlandse afkomst had volgens Kyle vooral voordelen: “Whenever I had sleepovers with friends my mom would normally make Dutch pancakes in the morning for us and all my friends would love that. Sometimes I would go to school with a sandwich with hagelslag and my friends would question what I’m eating.” Er is ook altijd Nederlandse kaas in huize Heuven. Dat is heel anders dan Canadese kaas. “There’s a Dutch store in Edmonton where my mom always got the Dutch treats for us!”

Typisch Nederlandse winkels vind je hier en hier. Je kunt er zelfs een cadeautje voor aan de schoolmeester kopen.

Is Kyle wel en echte Canadees? Als het op sport aankomt twijfelt hij: “I would always cheer on the Dutch ánd the Canadian athletes.” Dat is wel makkelijk, want neem voetbal. “We never had Canada in the Fifa World Cup until 2022 so I would always cheer on Holland.” En andersom zijn er natuurlijk typische Canadese sporten, als ijshockey en basketbal. Dan is Kyle fan van de Canadian Athletes. Voetbal kijken op de Canadese tv is trouwens nog wel een uitdaging: “I love watching soccer when I can, but it’s not something we can easily watch on TV because most of the sports on TV would be ice hockey or American football.”

Zelf is Kyle een liefhebber van de ‘Obstacle Course Racing’, wat bij ons ook wel de survivalrun heet. “I am really into running and Obstacle Course Racing, where I run between 5km – 21km and including lots of obstacles during the race. I’ve completed roughly 50 of these races since 2016.”

Net als zijn ouders en zus Kayly vond Kyle het in zijn jeugd wel lastig dat hij geen andere familie in de buurt had. “During the holidays most of my friends had their whole family around them, including cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents. But we didn’t. We spent ours with just the four of us. But we also did spend time with some of my parents friends because they also didn’t have family in the area.
I currently live 10 minutes away from my parents so I do like being quite close to them because if I ever need help for anything or I just want to see them it’s very convenient for me to go see them. Where as my sister Kayly lives almost 4 hours aways so I don’t get to see her very often.”

Kyle zag opa en oma ook alleen maar als hij in Nederland kwam of andersom zijn naar Canada. Toch, als Kyle in Nederland komt is het niet de familie die hij het eerst bezoekt. Het is de snackbar: “the first thing we would eat is kroketten and fries with mayonnaise. Especially kroketten because they’re hard to come across in Canada.”

Overall is Kyle zijn ouders dankbaar dat ze geëmigreerd zijn. I’m very thankful that I’m a son from Dutch immigrants” Hij heeft een goed leven in een land waar hij zich helemaal thuis voelt.
